Being a mentor is an important and rewarding role. Your guidance, experience and encouragement can make a real difference as an early career teacher develops their knowledge, confidence and classroom practice.
At Red Kite Teaching School Hub, we work in partnership with University College London Institute of Education (UCL IOE) to deliver the Early Career Teacher Programme (ECTP). Our programme is designed to support both ECTs and the mentors who work alongside them.
We recognise the value of effective mentoring and want you to feel supported, prepared and connected throughout the programme.
As a mentor, you will provide regular support to help your early career teacher make the most of their professional learning and apply it in the classroom.
This includes:
Meeting regularly with your ECT to discuss their development and reflect on their practice.
Supporting them to engage with programme content and professional learning.
Helping them connect evidence-informed ideas with their own classroom context.
Encouraging professional reflection, discussion and enquiry.
Providing constructive feedback and helping them identify next steps.
Mentoring is about more than sharing advice. It is about creating the time and space for a colleague to reflect, develop and become increasingly confident in their own practice.
The programme includes training and development to help you build your knowledge and skills as a mentor.
Through the UCL programme and support from Red Kite, you will have opportunities to explore effective mentoring approaches, develop your understanding of the programme and connect with other mentors.
Whether you are new to mentoring or bring considerable experience to the role, we want the support to be useful and relevant to your context.

A successful mentoring relationship depends on regular, purposeful conversations and protected time.
We encourage mentors and ECTs to:
Establish a regular meeting time.
Create an open and supportive space for professional discussion.
Connect programme learning with the ECT's current priorities.
Review progress and identify areas for further development.
Make time to reflect on what is working well and what might need to change.
