Collaborative working to enhance maths teaching
The Maths Hub is working to raise levels of achievement in maths and increase the appreciation of the power and wonder of maths. There are many Maths CPD opportunities which start in January or February. All are free of charge, offered by Yorkshire Ridings Maths Hub. Yorkshire Ridings Maths Hub are one of the 40 Maths Hubs across the country, funded by the DfE, to help schools lead improvement in maths education. They work closely with the NCETM to develop and spread excellent practice for the benefit of all pupils. The programmes starting in January and February are:
Secondary Subject Leadership – Face to face starting 11th January.
This community is made up of 3 full days where secondary heads of department and subject leaders can network and develop in their role as leaders of both student learning and teacher professional development.
Specialist Knowledge for Teaching Mathematics: Early Career Teachers - Face to face starting 1st February.
This programme is designed for secondary ECTs and will explore multiplicative reasoning, double number lines, ratio tables and proportion. Participants will work deeply on these areas of maths, drawing in the associated pedagogy, and activities will include lesson analysis and lesson design.
Making Connections between Maths & Science for pairs of maths & science teachers - Face to face starting 25th January.
The Work Group will identify and explore a range of concepts that are taught in both Maths and Science, the pedagogy participants of different subjects would use when introducing these concepts and decide on a common approach.
Making Connections between Maths & Computing for pairs of maths & computing teachers - Face to face starting 16th January.
The Work Group will explore the links between Mathematical Thinking and Computational Thinking, and how teachers can work together to developing pedagogical approaches to support each other’s subject.
Beginning to Understand Teaching for Mastery – Online, starting 18th January.
Beginning to Understand Teaching for Mastery is a programme for schools that are on the Teaching for Mastery programme, so have worked with a Secondary Mastery Specialist to develop Teaching for Mastery in their department but have new staff who have joined the team that have not had this input. This allows new staff to get up to speed with their understanding of what Teaching for Mastery is.
Year 5 - 8 Continuity - Cohorts running in Harrogate, East Riding, Tadcaster & Ryedale – Face to face starting Jan/Feb depending on area.
This programme aims to strengthen the transition from primary to secondary school by focusing on curriculum and pedagogical continuity over Years 5 to 8. This is for schools and their feeder Primary schools.
Years 7-11 Coherence - algebra and graphs. - Face to face starting 21st February.
This Work Group focuses on participant teachers working together to analyse, deconstruct and trace through the curriculum a selected key topic area, developing insight into effective teaching approaches, and considering the implications for longer term curriculum design.
