2023-24 ITT Engagement
Building Knowledge
ITT Engagement Survey
In November 2023, a survey will be distributed to all schools in our region to begin to build a picture of the Initial Teacher Training landscape.
This information has been requested by the Department for Education (DfE) and we are encouraging all schools to complete the survey by Friday 8th December.
Improving Teacher Recruitment
Providing Opportunities
The results from the survey will be analysed to inform our understanding of local contexts and challenges, so that we can identify ways of supporting teacher training providers and schools to work together to train the best possible teachers in our region.
High-Quality Placements
Hosting a trainee for one of their teacher training placements can be a rewarding experience for the school and the members of staff involved in their support. All trainees have a mentor, and ITT providers provide free professional development in the form of evidence-based mentor training. Training covers the core content framework (CCF) for ITT which brings together the best possible research-informed practice, as well as coaching and mentoring skills.
Trainees bring with them a wealth of ideas, enthusiasm and energy, and it is rewarding to see them grow and develop as beginning teachers. Trainees contribute to curriculum and lesson planning, and resource development; they immerse themselves in the life of the school and its community, contributing to extra-curricular activities and events. Many go on to successfully gain employment in their placement schools.
Intensive Training and Practice (ITaP)
Within the ITT curriculum from 2024, there will be an increased focus on Intensive Training and Practice (ITaP). All ITT providers will include ITaP experiences in their programmes - short periods of time where trainees focus on a specific area of practice. They will study the research and evidence related to the chosen area, observe professionals using the techniques, and rehearse and practise this themselves. As part of this process, they will train in and visit other schools to gain this intensive experience. Providers models vary but this is likely to range from half a day up to one week. ITaPs are an excellent way for schools to showcase excellent practice, support ITT and meet the next generation of early career teachers.
